This is an infographic from Neil Patel that gives a pretty good idea of what Conversion Rate Optimization is and what you should be focusing on when doing CRO. Here it is with a few comments of mine below (and where I disagrew with Neil).
I do disagree with Neil, however, when he says to start small with your testing. Most big wins I've had for clients, and I'm talking about 60% lifts and above, even 100%+ lifts, all come from making huge, bold changes to a page. Bold changes to pages equal bold results. Sure, sometimes it's a miss, but you learn from that and move one.
Also, the benefit of knowing what made the biggest impact is secondary to getting that big lift as soon as possible. Let's maximize our chances of getting a win and make more money now.
After you get that big lift, it's very easy then to go back to testing smaller elements and learn from that, but at least you already are banking on your winning challenger.
In any case, if you are new to Conversion Rate Optimization, this will give you an excellent start.
